Reading 8 How the #FuckFuckJerry Movement Was Born The notorious Instagram joke thief was never brought to justice, until now.
New York Magazine (Vulture)
Homework 9.A OpenLab Discussion The main reason I've assigned this article is to get you thinking about plagiarism in 2019. We've seen public figures like Fareed Zakaria and Jill Abramson come under scrutiny for uncited sources in traditional outlets like publishing and TV, but the #FuckFuckJerry Movement has pointed a much sharper lens over the social media delivery system at large. What are your thoughts on plagiarism in today's world? And yes, I'm assigning you this in hopes that you will be inspired NOT to plagiarize on your Midterm Proposal. OpenLab Forum
Homework 9.B Research Site or Article A + 2 (Additional) Progress Shots The Midterm Proposal is due April 18. This means you should be well under way (especially considering the homework you've been assigned over the past couple of weeks). Please compose a rough draft commenting on one of your cited resources and how it applies to your final project goals.

Reading 8 HTML & CSS Is Hard Composing HTML and CSS documents is new for many of you. I find that a lot of textbooks on HTML/CSS can be overly detailed, however I also realize that being able to contextualize introductory HTML and CSS rules might be helpful for some of you. Please read the following sections, especially if you are struggling with HTML and CSS:
  • Introduction
  • Basic Web Pages

Homework 7 and 8 Survey the Field Rough Draft + 2 Progress Shots PART I: At this point you should already be starting your Midterm Proposal/Final Project. The Midterm Proposal is due April 18. For this week you have no assigned reading, instead you are asked to turn in a 250 word rough draft of your "Survey the Field" section. I'd also like you to take two screenshots demonstrating work you have done on your project so far. This could be a screenshot of a portfolio page in HTML, or screenshots of an image overlay you've created in photoshop to include in a video.
PART II: Take the 250 word rough draft and your two screenshots and present them within an HTML page. Take a screenshot of the backend (Your HTML and CSS in the Atom text editor) and the frontend (web browser like Firefox or Chrome). I've provided a template for you to use.

Reading 5 A Tale of Two Titmouses
and
‘Rick and Morty’ Co-Creator Justin Roiland: “F#$% The Union”
Though they share the same name and the same owners, there is a wide starting salary gap between the two Titmouse animation studios that operate in Los Angeles and New York City. While wages for artists in the New York TV animation industry have historically been lower than their Los Angeles counterparts, the gap appears to be widening.

Last weekend the Los Angeles animator’s union The Animation Guild announced that they had helped the overworked and underpaid artists on Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty ratify a new labor agreement. It’s a remarkable story—rarely does an entire TV series crew, like Rick & Morty’s, decide to pull together in mid-production to address poor labor conditions. By sticking together, they achieved their desired results.

Reading 2 Electronic Arts DeluxePaint Early Source Code "Dan Silva created DeluxePaint in 1985 at Electronic Arts, a then 3-year-old publisher of computer games. The initial goal was to write an internal graphics design program, called “Prism”, for creating game artwork at EA. But it quickly became clear that it was a general-purpose design tool that might have broad appeal outside of EA." Computer History Museum
Homework 2.A OpenLab Discussion Comparing something like DPaint to packages like Adobe Photoshop and GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), what are some differences you notice? Similarities? Are you surprised by the sophistication of the DPaint software as demonstrated in the accompanying video? Why or why not? Feel free to discuss any other thoughts you might have about this reading. OpenLab Forum
Homework 2.B Aspect Ratio vs. Screen Resolution The provided image is from the film Seven Samurai:

Please create two versions of this image using Photoshop or Gimp that meet the following specifications. The first image should have a 4:3 aspect ratio. The width should be 640 pixels. The second version of the image should have a 16:9 aspect ratio. The width of this version should be 1080px. For this exercise do not worry if image quality suffers/looks blurry. Remember, whether you are using Photoshop or Gimp, you can use the `IMAGE > CANVAS SIZE` technique or the `IMAGE > SCALE IMAGE` technique. Please upload both versions to Vocat. Further reference documentation can be found HERE.
CURVE BALL: I gave you a 1080px width requirement, that would be the HEIGHT of the standard "Full HD" resolution. To have a 1080px width would require a height of approximately 608px to get a 16:9 aspect ratio.
